Changes in the law on PESEL UKR
As of July 1, 2024, changes in the law on PESEL UKR have come into effect.
This document granted Ukrainians who moved to Poland due to Russian aggression the right to legally reside in Poland, access the labor market, and receive free medical care and social assistance.
Previously, Ukrainian citizens had 30 days to obtain PESEL UKR by presenting any document, such as a driver's license or Ukrainian passport. From now on, the new rules require immediate application to local authorities for PESEL UKR upon arrival in Poland and the provision of only a foreign passport.
These innovations are implemented to prevent illegal crossing of the Polish border. From now on, those who cross the border to obtain temporary protection in Poland will not be able to obtain PESEL UKR without presenting a foreign passport.
In addition, the conditions for obtaining photographs for PESEL have changed. Previously, Ukrainian refugees were entitled to free photography to obtain this document. Now the photographs will be charged, and this change has already been registered with the authorities.
These changes in Polish legislation require increased attention from Ukrainian refugees, as untimely obtaining PESEL UKR may affect their right to reside and access necessary services in Poland.
