How to apply for maternity benefits?

Expecting a baby is not only a joyful time, but also a time of important legal decisions. If you work legally in Poland and have health insurance, you are entitled to maternity benefits (świadczenie macierzyńskie). To apply for the benefit, you must

Have a confirmed sick leave due to incapacity for work due to pregnancy;
Be in an employment or civil law relationship with the employer;
Submit an application to the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) within the prescribed time limit.

Conditions and process for receiving a one-time childbirth allowance

The one-time childbirth allowance (the so-called Becikowe) is a payment of PLN 1000 granted to a family after the birth of a child. To receive it

the pregnant woman must register for medical care before the 10th week of pregnancy;
a medical certificate confirming that this has been done must be submitted;
the family's income must not exceed a certain threshold (determined annually);
the documents must be submitted to the local commune or via electronic services within 12 months after the birth of the child.

What is the Kosiniakowe payment and who is eligible to receive it?

It is a monthly payment of PLN 1,000 granted to those who are not eligible for standard pregnancy and childbirth benefits, such as students, the unemployed, or persons who worked without an employment contract. The payment can last up to 52 weeks (for one child) or longer in the case of a multiple pregnancy.

To receive it, you must:

be legally registered in Poland;
provide documents confirming your status (e.g., unemployed or student);
submit your application on time — preferably no later than three months after the birth of the child.
