Vehicle Registration in Poland

Buying and registering a car in Poland is possible for a foreigner staying in the country legally.

When purchasing a used car, a sales contract (Purchase-Sale Agreement VAT Invoice or VAT Margin Invoice) is signed, and the vehicle owner transfers the vehicle documents, vehicle card, technical passport, and insurance policy to the new owner (the new owner can obtain their own insurance).

After the purchase, the car owner must register it within 1 month, otherwise, a fine will be imposed. To register, it is necessary to determine whether it is permanent registration (if you plan to drive it in Poland or other EU countries) or temporary registration (if the car is purchased to be transported to a country outside the European Union).

Required Documents for Car Registration in Poland:

• foreign passport;
• purchase-sale agreement or invoice;
• vehicle card;
• registration certificate;
• insurance policy;
• license plates.

Registration takes place at the office according to the place of residence. There, you receive a form to fill out, in which you provide all the information about the car from the documents you have (required documents), and also attach a list of documents to be included. You will need to attach a receipt for the payment of all fees and taxes:

• registration fee;
• fee for the registration certificate;
• fee for license plates;
• fee for temporary permit;
• fee for inspection sticker;
• fee for legalization sticker;
• fee for disposal;
• excise duty when purchasing a new car.

All the documents need to be submitted to the inspector, and if everything is in order and all the bills are paid, you will receive a temporary registration certificate, license plates, and stickers, and within 30 days of registration, you will receive a permanent registration certificate (its validity is limited by the duration of the foreigner's legal stay in Poland).
