When moving to Poland for a long stay and employment, it is necessary to have documents for legal residence in the country.
The document certifying identity, status, granting the right to lawful residence, and other rights in Poland is called the Karta Pobytu.
There are two main types of Karta Pobytu – for temporary residence and for permanent residence. There is also a third type – the blue card, but obtaining it involves separate conditions.
With a contract with the employer "Umowa o pracę" or "Umowa zlecenia," the Karta Pobytu is issued for the duration of the contract, but not exceeding 3 years. This is a temporary residence permit.
A contract with the employer "Umowa o dzieło" usually involves one-time work, which is completed in a short period, so permission may be denied.
Advantages of the Karta Pobytu compared to a visa:
- the opportunity for legal employment;
- multiple border crossings and the ability to travel to other EU countries without obtaining an additional visa;
- the ability to stay in Poland for a longer period than with a regular visa;
- the ability to purchase and register a vehicle;
- the ability to receive medical assistance in Polish state clinics;
- the opportunity to start your own business;
- after the first card, which is valid for 15 months, the next one is usually issued for 3 years, and continuous residence in the Republic of Poland with Karta Pobytu for 3 years gives the right to obtain a permanent residence permit – Karta stałego pobytu.

The issuance of Karta Pobytu is currently delayed due to workload. However, there is no need to worry about this because proof of legal stay in Poland, even if your visa expires, can be a stamp in the passport or receipts for mailing documents.
Documents must be submitted as a single package. In case of errors in completing the application or discrepancies in documents, delays in their submission, an inspector may contact you for clarification, or the issuance of Karta Pobytu may be delayed.
