Sworn Translation

To resolve many issues regarding document legalization in another country, you may need a sworn translation of document originals, as well as an apostille on them.

A sworn translation is a translation carried out by a sworn translator who has passed language and legislation exams, taken an oath, and been registered in the country where they carry out this translation. Such a translation must have the seal and signature of the translator, a clause (a special addition to the translation) about the accuracy and correctness of the translation performed, and also be entered in a special register.

Due to the rules for preparing a sworn translation described above, no sworn translator will undertake to confirm someone else's translation. Many confuse a notarized translation with a sworn one, but in the case of the former, the notary only certifies the signatures of the persons, while the sworn translator attests to the correctness of the translation and fully assumes responsibility for it.

Documents requiring a sworn translation (the list may vary in different countries, but in most cases, the list is as follows):

• documents submitted to court as evidence;
• court decisions and rulings;
• documents from the registry office - birth certificates, name change certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates, death certificates;
• education documents - diplomas, certificates;
• medical certificates;
• employment record;
• notarial statements and powers of attorney;
• property ownership documents.

Sworn translation may be required in Poland for:

• obtaining a residence permit;
• employment;
• enrollment in a university, police school, or other educational institution;
• receiving social assistance from state authorities.
